Proj. 8- War of the Mind: Ataraxy vs Apprehension

Image
Project 8. Allatonceness War of the Mind: Ataraxy vs Apprehension      The piece is an extension of a previous soundscape project. This initial soundscape project aimed to create a feeling of tranquility and peace through sounds captured in nature as well as ethereal sounds from the human body (humming) to create an out of body experience, a calming effect, or to be used as a meditation sound. This project aims to expand on that concept by creating an atmosphere that explores the mind, specifically an anxious, worried, or overwhelmed mind through the loops and bounds of an overthinker. I attempted to convey the calm before the storm, the unnerving, and dizzying experience experienced by many overthinkers. I also attempted to show how one can go through this spiral of thoughts. You can sometimes become lost within your own mind or can become lost within yourself to the point that you do not recall who you were before you awoke.

Creators of newARTSpace: Terri Warpinski and David Graham      On Wednesday, March 1, 2023. I attend an artist talk at the Wriston Auditorium. There were two artists named Terri Warpinski and David Graham who were presenting as duo artists to speak about their years (collectively 75 years) of artistry specifically the medium of photography. They started the talk with introductions and a look into their artistic careers beginning with Terri Warpinski whose awards and accomplishments alone make her stand out amongst the crowd with her being distinguished as a Fulbright Senior Fellow to Isreal in 2000-2001, as Professor Emerita of Art in 201 after a 32-year-career teaching at the University of Oregon and was the Honored Educator of the Society for Photographic Education at their international conference in Philadelphia in 2018. Although Warpinski has had a very eventful life as an international photographer, her start within the world of photography was in college when she started out wit

The Electronic Age of The Beatles

The Electronic Age of The Beatles  Powerpoint      I have to say working on this project was very interesting and gave me greater insight and appreciation for the Beatles as not just a "psychedelic" band, but one that is revolutionary and innovative. I was already a fan of the Beatles before choosing them as my subject for my project, but when looking deeper into how their use of electronic music shaped the way many records were made after the 60s due to their experimental sounds and use of tape slicing was very interesting to research. As well as learning more about the process of multi-track recording or Automatic double-tracking or artificial double-tracking (ADT) which is an analog recording technology designed to enhance the sound of voices or instruments during the mixing process. It uses tape delay to create a delayed copy of an audio signal which is then combined with the original. Through my research, I found that the Beatles started using this in their 1968 Revolver

Ataraxy: Soundscape Proj.

Image
Soundscape Proj.  My aim for this project was to create a soundscape that emulates meditation or deep listening practices with ambient and ethereal sounds that draw from nature and the human body. The idea that I wanted to be presented and what drove the meaning behind my soundscape project was one that can transport the listener to another place or another state of mind. I wanted the outdoor landscape (rain, wind chime, birds, and running water) to produce a calming effect on the listener. As well as give them the feeling of self-soothing which can be heard through the humming. I wanted my project to create what McLuhan states, “the desired psychological response in the listener”. Additionally, when looking for visuals to represent my project I stumbled across this picture which contains a lone tree in the middle of a body of water surrounded by a forest. I chose this visual to represent my project because I want my soundscape to represent serenity, tranquility, and peacefulness for t

Artist Talk with Carol Emmons

Artist Talk w/ Carol Emmons  On Wednesday, January 25, 2023. I attended an artist talk at the Wriston Auditorium. The artist featured was Carol Emmons, who specializes in large, site-specific installations. She has traveled to the U.S. (Cleveland, Houston, Cincinnati, New York, Santa Ana) and parts of Europe (Germany and the Netherlands) to showcase her exhibits. She was also selected for eight Wisconsin Triennial exhibitions at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art. So, having a very accomplished artist talk about their work and the process of their installations was fascinating.      I really enjoyed the layout of her presentation the most, it allows me to easily follow along with her concept question and helped me get a grasp on what direction she was headed within her own artist's process as well as which of those aspects we can relate to and possibly utilize within our own work. She started the presentation off by stating something that I thought was really profound "yo

Connected to the Madness

Connected to the Madness By: Day's Posts   Description: created on an iPhone, produced in Imovie and Premiere Pro.  Creation Date: January 17, 2023  I wanted my video to relate to McLuhan’s passages about the invasion of technology and its effects on the way we process the world around us, and how it can connect us, and create community and conformity. But, my main focus was on the ways in which those same technologies have created distance from the way we experience life. The ways in which it disconnects us from moments where we want to be fully present, and how it can disrupt our thinking on communication with each other. I used these statements from McLuhan’s text within my video to explain the meaning behind what the viewer is seeing. McLuhan states on page 63, “Because of electric speed, we can no longer wait and see” as well as, “Information pours upon us, instantaneously and continuously… Our electrically-configured world has forced us to move from the habit of data collecti

I'm Daynesia (Day- ne -sha), but I usually use Day because it's more convenient for me. I'm a sophomore studying Studio art and a minor in Ethnic studies. However, my passion is to be a Graphic Designer and to potentially work as a production artist or in advertising/marketing. My world is filled with movie-watching, napping 💤, music listening, introversion (by choice, because  my alone time is so meaningful to me), word crosses , and knitting 🧶. But also one that has had its fair share of hardships, sacrifices, and turmoil. Even though I've had to trudge through my life, it's taught me perseverance and what it means to give your all for something you want. Additionally, it's taught me how to think creatively and the possibility of wonder because even though I'm pessimistic about certain things in life, I also see the bright side. Creative expression and the magical process of art-making have become a significant part of my life, all the ins, and outs
